In partnership with the Columbus Area Arts Council, Bartholomew County Public Library and Exhibit Columbus, Plein Air Painters are invited to celebrate the historic landmarks of Columbus, Indiana. The Paintout will occur during the final day of the inaugural 2016 Exhibit Columbus Symposium, “Foundations and Futures”.
What is Plein Air Painting?
Plein Air Painting is to paint in open air, similar to a studio without walls. The tradition goes back many centuries and is credited to the French Impressionists who often traveled with portable easels and paint materials to capture the changing light, landscapes and outdoor environments.

When does the event start and do I need to check in with The Arts Council?
The event starts at 2:00pm on the Library Plaza in front of Henry Moore’s, Large Arch. A volunteer from the Arts Council will be available to answer questions at 1:30pm – 4:30pm. We appreciate all participants checking in before starting to paint. We want to meet you and add your name to our mailing address for future Arts Council community events.
How much does the event cost and who can participate?
The event is free and open to the public. Participants do not have to be professional artists or members of a Plein Air Association. We encourage all ages and members of the community to participate and attend.
Do I have to paint on the Library Plaza?
There are many historic landmarks near Library Plaza, including I.M. Pei’s Library, Eliel Saarinen’s, First Christian Church, Henry Moore’s, Large Arch. Participants are welcome to paint in other areas central to the Arts and Entertainment District, however we encourage activity on Library Plaza during the Plein Air Paintout from 2:00pm – 7:00pm and the Exhibit Columbus Closing Reception from 5:00pm – 7:00pm.
Will paintings be available for purchase and who will benefit from the proceeds?
Paintings can be sold during the reception on Library Plaza. All transactions will be made independently from the Arts Council and proceeds go to the artist.
Who will supply the materials?
All materials will need to be supplied by the participant. We recommend an easel, canvas or paintable surface, your choice of paint, brushes, drawing utensils, a sketchbook and so forth.
What if I am not interested in painting, but would like to observe the Plein Air Paintout or attend the Exhibit Columbus Closing Reception?
Bring a chair and a small table as you may want to take a break on the Plaza. It’s a lovely place to sit and enjoy life in Columbus. All are welcome to attend.
Are there public restrooms available during the event?
