Evoking elements of Cubism and with a futuristic feel, Emergence #11 captures the emergence of a human form. The work is constructed of painted, welded steel. Stephenson’s body of work focuses on the abstraction of the human form and how it conveys a complex and layered language. He begins his process by defining a graphic silhouette that captures the body in motion. From there he defines the subtleties that reside in the transitions between bone and muscle, torso and limbs, line and mass. The cover plate for Emergency #11 acts as a portal and is adorned with artifacts that acknowledge the history of the materials and tie them to the industrial age.
