COLUMBUS MURAL PROJECT
The Columbus Area Arts Council, in partnership with the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department and the Bartholomew County Youth Services Center, administers a multi-year youth development program that uses the creative process to positively influence the lives of at-risk youth.

Goal
Guided by a mission to educate through quality arts experiences, this project serves a range of populations, from at-risk teens to youth with disabilities to young people in under-served areas of our community. A by-product of this program is large-scale works of art within the city parks system that can be enjoyed by everyone. Our overarching goal is to encourage the development of a healthy community by engaging young people and community members in the production of a collaborative work of art and to set a standard for creative partnering among other local agencies.

Process
The process includes brainstorming, collaboration, negotiation, planning, preparation, implementation, and evaluation - valuable life skills for all citizens. Returning participants are encouraged to take leadership and mentoring roles, and community participation is encouraged.

While the Arts Council seeks funds, provides artistic direction, and facilitates the process, the Parks Department donates the space and completes the required preparation and maintenance of the site, while Youth Services provides the valuable young people and counselors, transportation and lunches.
