Summer 2000: THE CALM AT THE CENTER
Lincoln Park Handball Court, East Wall
18th and Hawcreek Avenue, Columbus
The Site
Encompassing 33 acres on the city's northeast side, Lincoln
Park has softball fields, Hamilton Center Ice Arena, tennis
courts, handball courts, a playground, and lots of grassy
spaces. Just across Haw Creek from the Columbus Regional Hospital,
Lincoln Park is visible and accessible to patients, visitors,
hospital staff, and the general public.

The Process
With the location in mind, the first mural was painted on
the east wall of the handball court facing the Hospital. Between
July 31 and August 11, 2000, two VSA
arts of Indiana artists, 17 teenagers and seven Youth
Services counselors worked in consort to create a bold, colorful
work that reflects ideas and images pulled from sketchbooks,
group work, top ten lists, and intimate conversations. The
project was led by Dante Ventresca, a VSAI Master Artist from
Indianapolis, with assistance from Paul Neufelder, a VSAI
Solo Artist from Columbus.
